Lisbon, Portugal – November 2011
What propelled these men to set off on a journey beyond the known world? Most of their expressions are stoic, but a couple of these faces in stone are contorted by angst. These individuals were lured not by greed or pride or nationalism, but by an obsession that went beyond mere curiosity.
In this age of satellite maps, we now know what lies beyond the horizon. And yet some of us continue to voyage as a means of discovery. We are driven by that same disquiet. The sole uncharted territory is that of the psyche. It takes courage to venture into one’s own mysterious land. There is still a risk of falling off the edge.
Well said – and timely! As we enter 2013, let us continue to explore, to challenge, to embrace. Most of all, to be open to all possibilities. Thank you for another excellent post!!
Thanks for your words of wisdom, Rebecca. ๐
Excellent photo as always…this reminds me of my first trip to Lisboa last year. I was not expecting much from the city, but was quite surprised.
Thanks, Frances. Lisboa certainly is a colorful, atmospheric city. I didn’t check out any of the infamous nightlife, though, because I was traveling alone and I’d had quite enough macho annoyance during the day. Haha. So I probably missed out on another facet of the city.
Absolutely, that macho annoyance can be quite tiring for a female solo traveler — been in that situation before!
Lisbon was particularly difficult in that respect. I’m gonna write a post about it one of these days.
Journeying into the uncharted realms of the psyche– almost feel that this one was directed at me. Happy New Year LaV!
Oh, it WAS directed at you. Bwahahahahaha!
(just kidding) Just trying to help you start out your new year extra paranoid…
Happy 2013 to you, too, Bryan!
Beautiful Lisboa. Nice post!
Thank you. ๐
Excellent Post-and I love the picture of the monument-one of my favorite periods of history is the Age of Exploration-what an amazing time and what amazing individuals, though I am sure those who sailed with them were not always of the same mind ๐
Thank you. I’m intrigued with this Age as well, though I’m sure it was not at all as romantic as I envision it to be.
Hi, I loved to see Padrรฃo das Descobertas in your blog. Yes, I’m portuguese! ๐ Lisbon is an amazing city, small, but with history (said to be founded by Ulisses, yes that old). I hope that portuguese man did not annoy you to much, it’s mostly show off! :)) I like to think that we are a friedly people. Hope you come here again!
Hi Joao – I’d love to go to Portugal again and visit more of the country. Except for a few old men, the people were were very friendly. Cheers! ๐
Wonderful post… A very interesting reading dear Julie!!!!… Also, great pics ….๐ซโจ๐ happy weekend …. best wishes. Aquileana ๐
Thank you for your kind visit, Aquileana.
Indeed, falling off that edge is scary. This was just beautiful – wish I had another word right now to use, but with the photos, words, and message, it’s just how I feel about it. Thank you ๐
Thank you, Kelly. ๐ป
