What propelled these men to set off on a journey beyond the known world? Most of their expressions are stoic, but a couple of these faces in stone are contorted by angst. These individuals were lured not by greed or pride or nationalism, but by an obsession that went beyond mere curiosity.

In this age of satellite maps, we now know what lies beyond the horizon. And yet some of us continue to voyage as a means of discovery. We are driven by that same disquiet. The sole uncharted territory is that of the psyche. It takes courage to venture into one’s own mysterious land. There is still a risk of falling off the edge.
